What Is a Lung Nodule?

A lung nodule is a small spot or growth within the lung that is often discovered incidentally during imaging performed for another reason, such as a CT scan, chest X-ray, or cardiac imaging study.

The majority of lung nodules are benign (noncancerous) and may be related to prior infections, inflammation, or scar tissue. However, some nodules require additional evaluation to determine whether they represent an early lung cancer or another condition that should be treated.
