Biography

Dr. Kirk Joseph Matthews Jr. is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist who brings a wealth of experience in women’s health, gynecologic surgery, and clinical leadership to his patients at Wilmington Health. With a strong academic foundation, including a degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and a chief residency role at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Matthews has built a career defined by excellence and innovation. 

Dr. Matthews brings his family to the Wilmington Community from Raleigh, where he was a partner physician at Wilkerson Obstetrics and Gynecology, and President of the Women’s Health Alliance. His leadership roles have included hospital governance, where he has served as Department Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and board member for multiple committees at Rex/UNC Hospital and helping to ensure that patients receive the highest level of care grounded in safety, innovation, and best practices.

Above all, Dr. Matthews is known for his compassionate, patient-centered approach to care. He is dedicated to supporting women through every stage of life and places importance on trust, comfort, and partnership. 

When he is not in the office, Dr. Matthews enjoys all that the Wilmington coast has to offer. Whether it is surfing with his two sons, Oxford (12) and Henry (10), paddle boarding with his wife, or playing golf, he loves to spend time outdoors with his family (and their dog, Harriet).
