Biography

A native of North Carolina, Dr. Tyler J. O’Connor earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he earned the distinction of serving as Chief Resident. 

Throughout his medical training and career, Dr. O’Connor has earned recognition for his leadership, including being named Intern of the Year in 2022–2023 and later selected as one of only two Chief Residents for the 2024–2025 academic year. He has contributed to research in osteopathic manipulative medicine and vascular anatomy, with his work presented at national conferences and academic symposiums. 

During his residency, he received the following awards:

  • E. Thomas Marchburn Jr. AwardPresented to the third-year resident who best exhibits the outstanding qualities of an internist, as exemplified by E. Thomas Marchburn Jr., MD.
  • Outstanding Resident as Teacher AwardPresented to the resident who demonstrates exceptional teaching skill, as determined by evaluations from UNC School of Medicine students.

Dr. O’Connor’s commitment to service extends beyond the hospital. He has volunteered with clinics serving vulnerable populations in both the U.S. and abroad, including mission trips to Uganda and Kenya. Whether at the bedside or in the community, he is known for his empathy, collaborative spirit, and unwavering dedication to improving patient outcomes. At Wilmington Health, Dr. O’Connor exemplifies a holistic, patient-first approach to hospital medicine, grounded in clinical excellence.

In his free time, Dr. O’Connor enjoys spending time with his two children and his wife, Katie. He also loves exercising and exploring the outdoors.
