Biography

Dr. Hazem Ashhab comes to Wilmington Health with a distinguished background in clinical gastroenterology, administrative leadership, and academic teaching/program development. He graduated from the University of Jordan Medical School and Al-Quds University in Palestine with a full medical scholarship and completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Medical College of Ohio. He also has a Masters Degree in pathology of liver disease from University of Toledo (previously known as Medical College of Ohio in Toledo). He went on to serve as an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Ohio, and currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor with West Virginia University supporting both internal medicine and gastroenterology residents and students. Dr. Ashhab also has the distinction of having established an academic training program in advanced endoscopic procedures at the University of Palestine as well as having held an academic and department chair position there.

He has been repeatedly entrusted with administrative leadership positions by his colleagues, including service as Charleston Gastroenterology Associates managing partner, as a Board Member of the Charleston Surgical Hospital, and Chair of Medicine at Charleston Area Medical Center. He has also served on numerous other boards and committees while a founder of the only physician-owned hospital in West Virginia.

Dr. Ashhab practices a full range of clinical gastroenterology and performs a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures. Dr. Ashhab has extensive experience in advanced endoscopy including interventional ERCP and EUS, RFA ablation of cholangiocarcinoma and NET tumors of the pancreas, in addition to therapeutic endoscopy, stricture dilation and EMR of certain polyps/tumors.

Dr. Ashhab’s goal is always to practice evidence-based medicine, all while providing exceptional care to his patients. Dr. Ashhab has a great commitment towards his patients, but also has a great passion towards his students and young colleagues and fellows. He has been a great mentor who never hesitates to help and train.

Dr. Ashhab has four children, three in college and one in high school, and his wife Adala has an MBA from the University of Charleston. They enjoy the outdoors, biking, water sports, and traveling.
