Carotid Artery Disease occurs when the carotid arteries — the major blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain — become narrowed or blocked by plaque buildup. As these arteries become restricted, blood flow to the brain can be reduced, increasing the risk of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) and stroke. Carotid artery disease often develops slowly over time and may not cause noticeable symptoms until a serious event occurs. Risk factors include aging, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity, and a family history of cardiovascular disease.
Carotid artery disease can progress silently. Some individuals may not experience symptoms until a TIA or stroke occurs. Common warning signs may include:
• Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
• Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding speech
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden dizziness, loss of balance, or difficulty walking
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause
These symptoms may appear suddenly and may last only a few minutes, which can indicate a transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a “mini-stroke.” Even if symptoms resolve quickly, they require immediate medical attention as they may signal a higher risk of a future stroke.
Early detection is critical. Identifying carotid artery disease before a stroke occurs allows for lifestyle modifications, medication management, and medical intervention to reduce risk and protect long-term brain health.
Wilmington Health Vascular Surgery is offering carotid artery disease screenings using non-invasive diagnostic testing designed to evaluate blood flow and identify potential blockages in the carotid arteries. These screenings are quick and painless, providing valuable insight into your stroke risk and overall vascular health. Early detection allows for earlier treatment, improved quality of life, and prevention of serious complications.
