Structural Heart Program

Provider using a stethoscope to listen to a patients heart

Wilmington Health is always striving to collaborative and innovative solutions that demonstrate quality, reduce the cost of care, and improve the patient experience. The Structural Heart Program strives to accomplish just that.

Cardiologist Dr. Andrew Bishop performs transfemoral aortic valve replacement for patients with aortic stenosis, which is a collaborative program with Novant Health. The aortic valve is the main valve that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. With aortic stenosis, the valve becomes narrowed and stiff and is unable to fully open. The disease is progressive and can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, heart failure symptoms, syncope, and death.

The Structural Heart Program will evaluate patients with aortic stenosis who may be appropriate for this procedure. Our team provides office visits to screen the patient, provides comprehensive education to patients/families about aortic stenosis and management options, orders appropriate testing and referrals, and then follows patients before, during, and after their procedure.

Wilmington Health’s Structural Heart Program offers individualized care, easy access to appointments, and collaboration with other members of the healthcare team through our vast network of expert specialists and primary care providers. The program benefits our community by offering minimally invasive valve replacement without having to travel out of town. Wilmington Health is always looking for ways for our patients to have affordable and convenient access to quality care.
