Biography

Dr. Messina is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is fellowship trained in sports medicine and adult reconstructive surgery. He specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder as well as total joint replacement of the knee and shoulder. He has been in private practice in Wilmington since 1997.

Dr. Messina takes great pride in helping athletes and active people of all ages return to their pre-injury level of activity. He has extensive experience in treating athletes at all levels, from weekend warriors to the collegiate and professional levels. He has served as a team physician for several southeastern North Carolina high school teams.

Dr. Messina and his wife Zoe have 4 children. He enjoys traveling, music, and many outdoor activities such as golf, hiking, running, and tennis.

Dr. Messina made me comfortable with everything going on his demeanor and keeping me informed on what I was to expect, also his patience and kindness with my three year old daughter who accompanies me to my appointments - I visited another doctor within Wilmington health initially but I switched to Dr. Messina because he did my husbands ACL surgery , Messina had a great reputation with everyone I spoke to (past patients, P.T. offices, etc.) and he was much more professional than the other Wilmington health surgeon I met with previously. With Dr. Messina, I felt safe, cared for, and that I mattered.

I would hands down refer anyone to Dr. Messina, especially if the person is in sports. My son recently had an injury at a local football game. Right after my son was brought off of the field, Dr. Messina was right there to evaluate & talk him. He was very calming & confident with what he was seeing. He had us worked in to come into the office the very next morning to do some x-rays & just to confirm what he thought the situation was. Dr. Messina & his staff is top notch. If you have a sports related injury, go to this practice. You will not regret it!
