We have been and continue to closely monitor the CDC’s recommendations along with NC DHHS’s information regarding COVID-19 dosing schedules. At this time particularly with different variants arising the eligibility for booster doses of the vaccine has been expanded to essentially all individuals.
All individuals should have a primary series of vaccines (the initial doses which are closer together) followed by a booster dose (typically given months later).
Dosing schedule for most patients:
PFIZER VACCINE
Age | Primary series | Booster dose |
5-11 | Two doses three weeks apart | None |
12 and up | Two doses three weeks apart | One dose five months after 2nd dose |
Any mRNA vaccine can be used for a booster, except for those ages 12-17 it must be Pfizer
MODERNA VACCINE
Age | Primary series | Booster dose |
18 and up | Two doses four weeks apart** | One dose five months after 2nd dose** |
**Note the Moderna vaccine primary series dose is 100 mcg, booster dose is 50 mcg
JOHNSON & JOHNSON VACCINE
Age | Primary series | Booster dose |
18 and up | One dose | One dose two months after 1st dose*** |
***Note use of an mRNA vaccine for a booster dose is preferred over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Dosing Schedule for patients with moderate or severe immune compromised status:
PFRIZER VACCINE
Age | Primary series | Booster dose |
5-11 | Three doses at day zero, second dose three weeks later, and the third four weeks after the second dose | None |
12 and up | Three doses at day zero, second dose three weeks later, and the third four weeks after the second dose | One dose at least three months after the third dose |
Any mRNA vaccine can be used for a booster, except for those ages 12-17 it must be Pfizer
MODERNA VACCINE
Age | Primary series | Booster dose |
18 and up | Three doses at day zero, second dose four weeks later, and the third four weeks after the second dose** | One dose at least three months after the third dose** |
**Note the Moderna vaccine primary series dose is 100 mcg, booster dose is 50 mcg
JOHNSON & JOHNSON VACCINE
Age | Primary series | Booster dose |
18 and up | One dose followed by a second dose four weeks later of either mRNA vaccine | One dose two months after 2nd dose*** |
***Note use of an mRNA vaccine for a booster dose is preferred over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
