Biography

Dr. Deborah Hess is currently the only FPMRS-trained urologist/urogynecologist within a 100-mile radius of the Wilmington area. She is a urologist and pelvic surgeon with expertise in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) or Urogynecology.

Dr. Hess studied chemical engineering as an undergraduate, receiving both a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Engineering from Dartmouth College. She received her Medical Diploma from the University of Michigan School of Medicine and completed a Master’s of Science in Clinical Research at the University of Michigan. She then completed a Urology Residency at the Harvard Program in Urology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Hess completed a Fellowship Program in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.

Clinical Interests

In addition to seeing general urology (both male and female patients), Dr. Hess manages pelvic floor disorders including pelvic organ prolapse (vaginal bulge), urinary incontinence (leakage/accidents) and overactive bladder. They can range from conservative management to minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Dr. Hess is skilled in native tissue repairs without the use of transvaginal mesh for prolapse and incontinence. In addition, Dr. Hess offers urologic care for patients affected by neurogenic bladder due to diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease and Transverse Myelitis. She provides medical and surgical management of complex voiding disfunction, pelvic floor and genitourinary reconstruction for urinary fistulas, strictures and urethral diverticulum. She is also an aviation medical examiner, performing FAA medical exams.
